Things to do around the campsite

Follow trails through landscapes that range from white limestone cliffs to dark and golden schist. Discover peaceful river swimming spots and famous natural diving rocks, relax by the water, go climbing or enjoy the thrill of canyoning. You can also spend a quiet evening at the campsite before exploring local restaurants, markets, concerts and exhibitions.

In the heart of the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park, at the gateway to the Cévennes and close to several protected natural sites, La Châtaigneraie is an ideal base for choosing each day’s activities and discovering the many colours of South Ardèche.

• River swimming: about 10 minutes on foot to begin exploring, with four natural pools nearby that are easily accessible on foot or by bike.
• A guided horse ride with the Foussac equestrian centre, 1 km away.
• A paragliding flight for panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the campsite, just 200 m from the landing area.
• Canoeing, climbing, caving and canyoning, all available within 5 to 30 km of the campsite.

• La Virade du Batistou: a family walk above Gravières, with landscape interpretation and an introduction to local traditions past and present. A 6 km trail with 280 m of elevation gain, some climbs and steps; allow 3 hours 30 minutes. Suitable from age 8. Guided walks are offered during the summer season.
• La Promenade Vanséenne: cycle from the campsite to Les Vans via the river and the Marvignes plain. A 7 km loop taking around 1 hour.
• Les Eynes: a geological and panoramic hike from Gravières to Les Salelles, from sandstone country to schist landscapes, with river crossings. A 12 km loop taking around 4 hours 30 minutes, with 491 m of elevation gain.
• Serre de Barre summit: a mountain-bike ascent using the tracks. A 30 km loop with 900 m of elevation gain.

• Païolive Wood: an ancient forest covering 16 km² south of Les Vans, renowned for its rich biodiversity, extraordinary limestone formations and the Chassezac gorges.

• The Tanargue Massif: set on the watershed between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, its panoramic summits mark the transition between the Ardèche Mountains and the Cévennes d’Ardèche.
• The Ardèche Valley: from Pont du Diable to Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, a remarkable geological journey from basalt columns to the Ardèche gorges, with beautiful villages to discover along the way.
• Villages of character: Banne, Naves, Thines, Joyeuse and Les Vans offer outstanding architectural heritage, cobbled lanes and panoramic viewpoints to explore at your own pace.
• Local flavours and produce:
  • Meet local producers of cheese, wine, honey and charcuterie near the campsite and at local markets.
  • We will be happy to recommend good local restaurants that showcase quality Ardèche produce.
  • Markets: lively and colourful, with excellent fresh local produce. The Les Vans market takes place every Saturday morning, while neighbouring villages host markets on other days of the week. Evening markets are also held during the summer season.

• Le Viel Audon: since 1970, a collective has brought this ruined hamlet back to life through a sustainable project based on cooperation and careful management of local resources. Discover it near Balazuc, 25 km away.
• Agroecology and the Terre & Humanisme gardens: an association founded by Pierre Rabhi that promotes agroecology through a wide range of initiatives. Visit its gardens at Mas de Beaulieu in Lablachère, 15 km away.
